Professor Julius Olugbenga Soyinka
Professor Julius Olugbenga Soyinka is a distinguished academic and researcher in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, with extensive experience in teaching, research, and professional service in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is widely respected for his scholarly contributions and commitment to advancing knowledge at the interface of drug chemistry, drug disposition, and rational therapeutics.
Academic and Research Expertise:
Professor Soyinka’s core areas of expertise include:
Pharmacokinetics – with strong competence in the study of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, and their implications for optimal dosing and patient safety.
Pharmacogenomics – focusing on genetic determinants of drug response and variability in therapeutic outcomes among diverse populations.
Pharmaceutical Analysis- encompassing qualitative and quantitative analysis of drugs using modern analytical techniques to ensure quality, safety, and efficacy.
Research Interests and Ongoing Work:
Professor Soyinka’s research is driven by the need to improve therapeutic outcomes in populations with a high burden of infectious diseases. Pharmacokinetic interactions between antimalarial, antimicrobial, and antiretroviral drugs, with particular emphasis on co-administration in patients with multiple infections. Evaluating the clinical relevance of drug–drug interactions to inform safer prescribing practices. Generating evidence that supports rational drug use and policy formulation in resource-limited settings. His work contributes significantly to the understanding of how commonly co-prescribed medicines influence each other’s pharmacokinetic profiles, with the ultimate goal of minimizing toxicity and therapeutic failure.
Teaching and Professional Service
Professor Soyinka is deeply committed to mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and related disciplines. He has supervised and examined numerous research projects and theses, contributing to capacity building in Pharmaceutical education and research. He also participates actively in academic administration, curriculum development, and professional engagements within and outside the University. Through his teaching, research, and service, Professor Julius Olugbenga Soyinka continues to play a vital role in strengthening Pharmaceutical Sciences education and research, particularly in areas relevant to public health and clinical practice in Nigeria and beyond.
